Basics: UT Austin is a public research university and the flagship campus of The University of Texas System. Its motto, translated from Latin, is “Cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy.” It was ranked tied for 52nd place among all universities in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 rankings.
Academics: It offers a total of nearly 270 degrees. In addition, there are eight honors programs that constitute the academic curricula of this big university. It is also one of the most selective universities in the region. UT Austin is considered to be one of the “Public Ivies”.
Demographics: The main campus totals 423.5 acres, in central Austin. The university is home to over 51,000 students (approximately 39,500 of which are undergraduates) and a collective staff of 24,000 people. It is a big university with a diverse population.
Collegiate Sports: The university’s athletic teams are nicknamed the Longhorns. They compete in the Big 12 Conference of the NCAA’s Division I-FBS. Traditionally, they are considered to be a college football powerhouse while men’s basketball has gained prominence. The school colors are burnt orange and white, and the mascot is Bevo.
Student Life: The Student Life at the University of Texas, Austin is amazing. There are fourteen residence halls on campus. The count of student organizations easily exceeds 1,000. Student Government is the oldest governance organization and represents student interests in general. Approx. 14% of the students are in fraternities or sororities. The student periodicals include Study Breaks Magazine, Longhorn Life, The Daily Texan, and the Texas Travesty.
