Student Life at University of Chicago

Basics: The University of Chicago is a private research university in Chicago. The College of the university grants BA and BS degrees in 50 majors and 28 minors. Along with this, the university is home to seven professional schools, four academic research divisions, and several graduate programs. The university’s motto is “Let knowledge grow from more to more, and so be human life enriched”.

Academics: The library system encompasses six libraries that contain a total of 9.8 million volumes, the 11th most among library systems in the US. The university has very high research activity, and it operates 12 research institutes and 113 research centers on campus. The University of Chicago has consistently been placed amongst the top 10 universities in the world by rankings organizations like ARWU and US News.

Demographics: The university currently enrolls approximately 5,000 students in the College and around 15,000 overall. The campus is urban, located in Chicago, Illinois. The main campus is spread across a vast area of 217 acres.

 Collegiate Sports: The university is the home of 19 varsity sports teams, all called the Maroons. The Maroons compete in the NCAA’s Division III as members of the University Athletic Association. The university was also a  founding member of the Big Ten Conference. The university colors are maroon and white, and the mascot is Phoenix.

 Student life: The University of Chicago Press is the largest university press in the United States. The university has over 400 operational clubs and organizations known as Recognized Student Organisations. There are, also, 15  fraternities and seven sororities at the university, as well as one co-ed community service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega.  One of the most prominent traditions at the university is the week-long winter festival, Kangeiko, hosted every January,  and which includes early morning exercise routines and fitness workshops.
